New Song Recorded Entirely on iPhone
This video documents the recording of “Love is the Thing,” recorded by The 88 entirely on the iPhone using a $9.99 app called Four Track (iTunes link). Besides enjoying the novelty of the process and the catchy song, watching the video raised a few questions.
(1) Is creativity driving the use of technology here, or the other way around?
(2) Because its getting easier/cheaper to make quality recordings (or video or graphic design), will it be easier to spot raw talent because the cost of entry isn’t getting in the way?
(3) This song could have been more professionally produced in a recording studio. But that wasn’t the point. So is more professional always better? Or are we sometimes craving the less-professional, less polished?
For so long, our churches have relied on having music, videos, and performances produced with excellence. A lot of times (not always) excellence has felt synonymous with “professional.” Many of our churches even hire professionals to provide our artistic offerings.
But is it possible that a shift in values is causing us to value excellence less and less? Or are we just re-defining what it means to be excellent?
