CNN: Loneliness Spreads in Social Networks

The CNN article isn’t so much about online social networks, but how a new study shows loneliness spreads through any network of relationships. It even breaks down how likely you are to become lonely based on your degree of friendship with someone else who is lonely.

We talk a lot about current changes in the way the Church gathers. But whatever it’s form, The Church will (almost by definition) continue to gather. And whether that gathering is 2 people large or 2000, there’s a social network there.

I’d love to see some similar research about the ways in which beliefs, values, and attitudes are transferred from one person to another in our churches. And for today’s churches that place such an emphasis on leadership, how attitudes and emotions are transferred from leader to follower.

What do these findings mean for us in the church who seek to gather people together, and help foster social networks of faith?
