Skittles and Web Sites vs. Web Strategy
Mark wrote a couple of weeks ago about whether most people need anything other than Facebook or Twitter. Others seem to be asking the same kinds of questions.
Church Marketing Sucks posted some thoughts recently about what was more important for churches: to have a web site, or a unified web strategy using available social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, and Ustream.
In the middle of the comments section was a link to something new that Skittles (the candy) is doing. If you go to skittles.com right now, you’ll be asked to enter your birth date. After that, you’ll be moved directly to the Wikipedia entry about Skittles. Above the page is a little widget-like window which allows you navigate using similar categories as other websites (home, products, media, contact, etc.)
Except, instead of of navigating around a Skittles-designed site, you navigate around a bunch of social media outlets that feature content about Skittles.
In essence, Skittles is experimenting with not having a web site, and instead having a really creative web strategy.

Very cool marketing approach. I mean, social networks are really why most people get online anyway…might as well give your market what they want. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting idea. Check out http://extendr.com which allows you to do something similar with your social media sites.
