The Evolution of Church Seating Arrangements

Doug Rowland, an MDiv student at Denver Seminary, provides a nice account of the development of church buildings and seating arrangements. From meeting in homes in the first century to the “third spaces” being built by today’s churches, the synopsis provides an interesting look at the values that have guided the Church’s choices over the years.

It made me think maybe the answer to “Why do we do things the way we do?” is often much bigger than “because we’ve done it like that for the past 30-50 years in this church.”

Instead, I think its more often about the overarching values of the Church over the past couple of hundred years.

On the other hand, I’m usually still left without a satisfying answer to “Why do we need to KEEP doing things this way?”
