The picture above shows the scene I saw two weekends ago at the Lee Dewyze American Idol celebration at Arlington Race Track. We couldn’t see Lee perform from where we were standing, but had a great view of the screen.
A week earlier, I was in the overflow seating for Wheaton College’s graduation, where we watched commencement via live video feed. In both cases, attendees weren’t able to take video or photos of the actual action, so what did they do? They pointed their cameras and cel phones at the video screens and recorded that instead.
And in both cases, I was genuinely surprised. “What’s the point?” I thought. There’s other ways to get photos and footage of the actual event without having to take your own photo of the video screen.
So what is it? Is there something that makes people feel more connected to the live experience (even if they’re watching it on a screen) when they’re participating in it by taking a photo? Is there something that says “I was there” with a photo or video you’ve taken yourself, as opposed to something you could find online?
I wonder if our desire to be involved a large gathering is so strong that we’re willing to treat non-live events, or video feeds of the event, as if they’re actually happening in the same room.
Nike Write The Future
Posted in communication, culture, story on 05/25/2010 by mark novelliNike produced this commercial for the world cup. It is fantastic! Not only visually amazing, but the story it tells about sports, culture and celebrity is really interesting. What do you think?
LOST is Over
Posted in culture, story on 05/24/2010 by Kelly DolanAfter 6 mind-bending seasons, TV show LOST came to its conclusion last night. If you watched it, what did you think? Satisfied? Left with a lot of questions?
Series creator J.J. Abrams has made a career out of telling stories with questions and mystery at the center. In this TED talk from 2007, he talks about where his love for mystery comes from, and how he uses it in his storytelling.
Overcoming Creative Block

Posted in about imago, learning on 05/20/2010 by mark novelliOne of the uniquenesses of Imago is a combination of creativity and follow-through. We strive to be people who bring ideas to life. That’s why this article caught my attention.
I am not typically a “5 easy steps” or “3 ways to” article guy. Most of the time they seem like a lame ploy to get readership or have overly simplistic content. I do, however, think that smashing magazine is generating some of the most practical and useful content on the web. This article is a great example of that.
How to Build Community
Posted in culture, faith, gatherings on 05/18/2010 by mark novelliI ran across this poster written by Eileen Mosca with the Syracuse Cultural Workers.I think it is a great picture of community. What does community look like for you?
Here is the text from the poster:
Turn off your TV
Leave your house
Know your neighbors
Look up when you are walking
Greet people
Sit on your stoop
Plant flowers
Use your library
Play together
Buy from local merchants
Share what you have
Help a lost dog
Take children to the park
Garden together
Support neighborhood schools
Fix it even if you didn’t break it
Have pot lucks
Honor elders
Pick up litter
Read stories aloud
Dance in the street
Talk to the mail carrier
Listen to the birds
Put up a swing
Help carry something heavy
Barter for your goods
Start a tradition
Ask a question
Hire young people for odd jobs
Organize a block party
Bake extra and share
Ask for help when you need it
Open your shades
Sing together
Share your skills
Take back the night
Turn up the music
Turn down the music
Listen before you react to anger
Mediate a conflict
Seek to understand
Learn from new and uncomfortable angles
Know that no one is silent though many are not heard.
Work to change this.
What Matters Now in Children’s Ministry – New ebook
Posted in about imago, faith on 05/17/2010 by Kelly DolanWe’re so excited that today, the new ebook What Matters Now in Children’s Ministry is being released. The book was created by Amy Dolan (my wife), Matt Guevara, Henry Zonio, and over 30 others. Each writer has written a short essay on one idea of their choosing that they believe to be of central importance to the spiritual development of children.
I’m also excited because Mark did all the design for the book, and I think he did an absolutely incredible job on it.
Perhaps the best news of all is that the ebook is FREE, and can be downloaded here from the Cory Center web site.
Congrats to Amy, Matt, Henry and all the other contributors. Thanks for asking us to be a part of it!
Sunday’s Coming
Posted in about imago, faith, gatherings on 05/14/2010 by mark novelliI laughed (and groaned) when I watched this. I give North Point Church a lot of credit for being willing to create a video like this, it shows self-awareness and an ability to laugh at themselves. It’s hard for me to imagine many mega-churches would be willing to do the same.
The USA TODAY ran an article about this video yesterday as well.
I’m glad that my job is to help organizations and churches do things differently that what is depicted in this video.
