For youth, internet is as essential as food!?

Networking company Cisco recently conducted a survey global survey of 18-29 year olds from 14 different countries. 33% of the more than 1400 surveyed said that internet access has become a basic need ranking behind air, water, food and shelter.

64% said they would prefer an internet connection to a having a car.

40% said that the internet is more important than dating or going out with friends or even listening to music.

Ideas from a math teacher that could change how you teach

Posted in communication, creativity, learning on 09/21/2011 by mark novelli

I think Dan Meyer’s approach to learning is brilliant. What struck me is how the principles of his approach apply to all kinds of learning, not just math.

Do any these issues sound familiar when thinking about those attending our church gatherings? Lack of initiative / perseverance / retention / aversion to word problems / Eagerness for formula

Especially in our shifting culture, I think his suggestions for helping learners are relevant: Use Multimedia / encourage student intuition / ask the shortest question you can / let students / be less helpful

I firmly believe that we need to push ourselves to embrace new learning methods in our gatherings, especially Church gatherings. This starts with empowering our congregations to discuss, imagine, explore, visualize, interact, experience – rather than sit and listen to a lecture or performance.

Let’s lead the innovation towards deeper learning environments!

Is Marketing is Dead?

Love this post by Michael Hyatt about how marketing is maybe not dead, but drastically changing. He bases his thoughts on Seth Godin’s book Tribes. I agree with Michael that it is a must read if you are serious about building an enduring career as a creative.

Here are some highlights:

  1. Discover your passion. Marketing is the act of sharing what you are passionate about. Nothing more. Nothing less.
  2. Volunteer to lead. Marketing is really about leading people who already want to follow. They just need a leader to take them where they already want to go.
  3. Be generous. The old marketing was about taking from people. As it turns out, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (see Acts 20:35) is a brilliant marketing strategy. When you lead by serving and by giving, people follow.
  4. Provide a way to communicate. People need a way to communicate. They need a way to share their stories.
Thanks to Michael Hyatt for this reminder. I am really thinking through what this means for IMAGO.
